A Few Frequently Asked Questions about Astrology

This may be handy to answer some of your questions about astrology; or you can just read through the article and you may learn something new. What is astrology? How does astrology work? What can astrology do for me? What information is required from me? Why is the Sun Sign so important in astrology? How come my two friends, who both have the same astrological sign, are different?

What is astrology?
Astrology is the science and art of calculating the positions of the heavenly bodies in relation to the Earth at any moment; plotting those positions on a chart; studying their relationships to each other and then interpreting how those positions and relationships will influence people and events on Earth. Astrologers believe that the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets and their relationships to one another at the time of a person’s birth, all have a direct influence on that person's character, and certain events in their lives.

How does astrology work?
The astrologer calculates the positions of the heavenly bodies, and plots them onto a chart which makes a sort of snapshot of the heavens as seen from any particular spot on Earth, at any given moment in time. When this chart is constructed for the precise moment and location of a person’s birth, it is called a birth chart or sometimes a natal chart or horoscope. The astrologer then studies the chart to determine the relationships between the planets and to interpret what all that information means. Every astrologer will have a slightly different style of interpreting how the traits associated with each planet will influence the person or the situation.

By noting the current positions of the planets in reference to your birth chart, the astrologer can show how your life is unfolding. This doesn’t mean that everything is fated though. There are always choices and we all have free will to make them. Astrologers can only predict the effect of the planets on your life.

What can astrology do for me?
An astrologer can predict the effects of planets on your life. He or she could tell you, for instance, the kind of work you’re likely to do, if you will be a good student, whether you’ll move away from your birthplace, when you’ll get married, how many children you have, any major illnesses, accidents, or other events in your life. Astrology can help you to better understand your life, your business problems and your relationships. It can clarify goals and provide direction. It can also warn you of possible dangers so that they can be avoided.

What information is required from me?
In order to make up your chart the astrologer will need the time, date and place of your birth. The columns that you read in newspapers use only Sun signs (where the sun was when a person was born). It is incomplete and generalized. Astrology is a complex subject requiring dedicated study. For a complete chart, the extra information is necessary.

Why is the Sun so important in astrology?
All of us here on Earth depend upon the Sun. Without it there would be no life. Although it’s not a very big star (as stars go). It is the largest heavenly body that is (relatively) close to Earth, and therefore has the most influence over our planet and all things living thereon.

How come my two friends, who both have the same astrological sign, are different?
Each person’s birth chart is calculated using the exact date, time, and location of his or her birth. Many people may be born on the same date (day, month and year), and quite a few during the same hour. In a large city with several maternity hospitals, it is even conceivable that several may be born in the same place, on the same day and within an hour or two of each other. But remember we are looking for the same precise time, and place. Very unlikely - even twins can’t manage that! The positions of the heavenly bodies on the chart change slightly every four minutes. A person’s birth chart really is a map of the heavens that shows the exact position of the sun, moon, and planets relating to the birth of the person for whom it is made and no one else. This is why two people who share the same Sun sign, can show slight or even quite pronounced differences. I’ll bet they have at least a few things in common though.
