What Good is Aromatherapy?

So we have all these really good smelling oils, that we can sniff, use in baths and massages, and spread around the house. That's nice - no really - it is, but what difference is it going to make? I mean isn't it just like having some fancy, expensive air fresheners or something? What good can it do?

It's a fair question from someone who has never experienced or witnessed the enormous benefits that aroma-therapy has to offer in so many areas.

The beneficial effects of essential oils have been noted for centuries. They trigger responses in the brain, which, in turn initiates physical processes to ease the symptoms of various common complaints, and conditions such as PMS, high/low blood pressure, dandruff, headaches, insomnia, and many more. Essential oils (diluted with a vegetable oil) are sometimes used in a therapeutic massage to intensify and enhance the process. This allows the oils to be absorbed through the skin, and enter the blood, whilst simultaneously being inhaled through the nose.

Aromatherapy is a natural system with a holistic approach that carries very few side effects. For those who no longer wish to rely on caffeine and chemicals to relieve the symptoms of stress and treat illness, it provides a feasible alternative. It is a convenient practice, which you easily carry out in your own home. Of course, you can pamper yourself with aromatherapy sessions at a spa if you want to, but these same treatments can be carried out at home if you're on a budget.

The aromatherapy process using essential oils from plants provide a plethora of health benefits when properly used. You can also use essential oils to set or encourage a certain mood. Oils such as chamomile, sandalwood, lavender, and sage, can help you to relax, and thus are good for treating stress, anxiety and insomnia. Pine, mint, or citrus (lime, orange, lemon, or grapefruit) oils are stimulating and uplifting. Use Gardenia, sandalwood, and jasmine oils to set a romantic mood.

You can also use them to treat ailments from coughs to depression. Where to begin? Well, let's start with a subject that is very real to many people ...

Stress
It isn't always easy to avoid stress, but these scents can help tension melt away, and transport you to a place of peace.

Sweet Serenity Blend
Add 5-10 drops to a nice warm bath and soak for 15 minutes or use as a massage oil.
20 drops Geranium
10 drops each of Bergamot and Ylang-ylang
5 drops Lavender
Mix the above oils in 5 ounces of Sweet Almond oil.

Or use it for…

Insomnia
Spray lavender oil in the bedroom, or put a few drops on a tissue and place it near to your pillow.
Try chamomile oil in the bath.
Other oils that can help you unwind are clary sage, marjoram, Neroli and ylang ylang.

* When you have a cough (anise, cedar, cypress eucalyptus, ginger, marjoram, peppermint, pine, rosewood or tea tree Soothe a sore throat (ginger, thyme or lavender).
* To care for your skin. Oily skin - cypress, lemon or tea tree. Dry skin - lavender, sandalwood, bergamot, rose, Neroli, jasmine, melissa, or ylang ylang. Blemished skin – cedar, chamomile, geranium or tea tree.
* To treat acne - tea tree (best), bergamot, chamomile, geranium, lavender, sandalwood, cedar, cypress, eucalyptus, fennel, juniper, lemon, myrrh, parsley, patchouli, rose, or rosemary
* For minor burns and cuts. Burns - lavender, chamomile, or geranium. Cuts - chamomile, lemon, or tea tree.
* To relieve allergy discomforts (chamomile, lavender or Patchouli)
* When you feel nauseous (peppermint and ginger).
* For athlete’s foot, nail infections, warts, rashes and insect bites (Tea Tree oil).
* To boost the immune system (lavender, lemon, bergamot, thyme, chamomile, pine, myrrh and vetivert)
* When you want to relax (lavender, marjoram or Roman chamomile)


... And if that's not enough, you can even use it to help reduce your wrinkles! The magic formula is a blend of equal parts Neroli; frankincense and lavender oils mixed in a base of sweet almond oil. Use on a regular basis.

There are many, many more ways that essential oils can be used to bring beneficial effects into our lives, and joy to our hearts. So don't ask what aromatherapy can do for you - it would be easier to discover what it CAN'T do!
